The principle is widespread and familiar using the cash card. The PIN or the card on its own cannot be used to withdraw money from a machine. Cash withdrawals are only possible when they are both used together. This increases security for the cardholder considerably, as it means that the loss of the card does not mean that money can simply be withdrawn.
Smartcards are also becoming widespread in the area of electronic passwords. Firstly, this is because the demand for increased security in user authentication has grown rapidly; and secondly, because user friendliness can be improved considerably through the use of smartcards. After all, everyone knows the problem of many applications with as many passwords.
